Il Museo del Carbone è situato nella Grande Miniera di Serbariu a Carbonia. Il sito minerario, chiuso nel 1964, è stato restaurato e riconvertito a fini museali e didattici. Il progetto per il recupero e la valorizzazione del sito ha reso fruibili l’area di superficie, alcuni edifici minerari e parte del sottosuolo:
- La Lampisteria, sede della mostra permanente sulla storia del carbone, della miniera e della città di Carbonia. La mostra include una preziosa collezione di lampade da miniera, attrezzi, oggetti d’uso quotidiano, fotografie, documenti, filmati d’epoca e videointerviste ai minatori.
- La Sala Argani, da cui si manovrava la discesa e la risalita degli ascensori (gabbie) nei pozzi per il trasporto dei minatori e delle berline.
- La galleria, che mostra l’evoluzione delle tecniche di estrazione dall’apertura negli anni ’30 fino alla chiusura nel 1964. Gli ambienti accuratamente riallestiti sono stati arricchiti con attrezzi dell’epoca e con grandi macchinari ancora oggi in uso nelle miniere di carbone attive.
I visitatori possono vedere il percorso in sottosuolo e la sala argani in visita guidata.
N.B. Si consiglia un abbigliamento appropriato per la visita ad un sito industriale con spazi interni ed esterni e suolo sterrato. Abiti confortevoli e scarpe comode sono essenziali.
Il percorso in sottosuolo è parzialmente accessibile ai visitatori con disabilità motorie.

The Coal Mining Museum (Museo del Carbone) is located in the Great Coal Mine of Serbariu in Carbonia. The mining site was closed in 1964 and has been restored and modified to become a museum and educational centre. With the development of the project to recover and improve the site, it is now possible to visit the surface area, some of the buildings and the underground gallery.
The tour:
- The Lamp Room with the permanent exhibition on the history of coal, the mine and the town of Carbonia. The exhibition includes a precious collection of mining lamps, work tools, everyday objects, photos, documents, short film clips from the period and interviews with the miners.
- The underground gallery shows how mining methods have changed over the decades from the 1930s until closing down in 1964. It has accurately reconstructed spaces enriched with work tools and machinery which were used in the past or that are still in use in coal mining.
- The Winch Room where the winding engine was used to move the cages up and down the shaft in order to transport the miners and the wagons.
Visitors can see the underground gallery and the Winch Room on guided tours.
NB Visitors are advised to dress appropriately for an outdoor industrial site with uneven surface. Comfortable clothing and footwear are essential.
The underground gallery is partially accessible to wheelchair users or visitors with serious disabilities who are welcome to take a shorter underground tour.

Groups and school parties: It is possible to visit the Museum throughout the year on normal opening days. The guided tour lasts one hour and a half. Please contact our offices in advance to book your visit.
